Funke Akindele’s A Tribe Called Judah just hit a tremendous record as the first ever Nollywood movie to hit one billion naira at the Nigerian box office. The movie has broken records on all fronts since it was released on 15 December 2023.

What can we say, 2024 is surely the year of success for everyone, and A Tribe Called Judah is solid proof. Not only is it a super entertaining film, it is also one of the biggest hits from a female director, and we’re totally here for it. As the highest grossing Nollywood Film, A Tribe Called Judah will go down in cinematic history as the first Nollywood movie to gross one billion naira nationwide in just three weeks.

The news officially broke in a press statement released by Film One Studios on Thursday, January 4, 2024. It stated "This cinematic masterpiece has not only captured hearts but shattered records, becoming the FIRST Nollywood movie to soar past the 1 Billion Naira Milestone at the box office.”

There’s also been a lot of speculation from skeptics who find the numbers a little bit hard to believe, but based on the reports, there is a clear indication that the movie did remarkably well in cinemas, so hopefully, we’re on the right side of history.

Based on reports from the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), by the end of 2023 the movie had a total gross of ₦854.3 million, which inevitably makes it the highest-grossing Nollywood title for 2023 and the highest ever. It's been making the rounds ever since as the numbers reached an all time high today.

A Tribe Called Judah is a story of five brothers: Jide Kene Achufusi as Emeka Judah, Timini Egbuson as Pere Judah, Uzee Usman as Adamu Judah, Tobi Makinde as Shina Judah, and Olumide Oworu as Ejiro Judah, they must all join forces to rob a company to save their mother, Jedidah Judah, played by Funke Akindele.

The brilliant cast and crew brought this exceptional title to life, and they are hitting a milestone that is proof that brilliant storytelling exists in Nigeria. This will be a tough act to follow for Nollywood movies to come, but we truly cannot wait to see what 2024 brings in the movie department.
