The excitement around the movie adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling fantasy novel Children of Blood and Bone took a sharp turn when one particular casting decision among many sparked heated debates online.

On Wednesday, Variety announced that Gina Prince-Bythewood’s upcoming action-fantasy film, set to hit IMAX theaters on January 15, 2027, boasts a star-studded cast: Thuso Mbedu, Damson Idris, Tosin Cole, and Amandla Stenberg in lead roles, alongside acting legends Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Lashana Lynch, Cynthia Erivo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Fans of the novel were thrilled to see some of their favorite stars attached to the project—until it was revealed that Stenberg would portray Princess Amari.

Why the Backlash?

In Adeyemi’s novel, Princess Amari is described as having “dark copper skin” and faces discrimination based on her skin tone—an essential plotline exploring colorism and its impact on young Black girls. Many fans argue that casting Stenberg, a biracial actress with lighter skin, undermines the representation of darker-skinned women who rarely see themselves in blockbuster films.

This isn’t the first time Stenberg’s casting has drawn criticism. A similar debate arose in 2018 when she played Starr Carter in The Hate U Give, a role some fans believed should have gone to a darker-skinned actress. While Stenberg hasn’t commented on the backlash, many fans have directed their frustration at Adeyemi and the production team for allegedly erasing one of the book’s key themes.

Another major criticism following the casting choices of the upcoming adaptation is its lack of Nollywood representation. The Children of Blood and Bone is a fantasy novel with a plot that rests heavily on Yoruba culture, and while the announced cast includes actors of Nigerian heritage, Nigerian fans are voicing their displeasure at the lack of a more indigenous cast of Nigerian actors.

A Divided Fanbase

Reactions to the casting reveal have been polarizing. Some fans applauded the diverse lineup, particularly Thuso Mbedu, whose breakout role in The Woman King made her a standout talent. Mbedu herself expressed her gratitude on Instagram, writing, “To know that I have the opportunity to work with some of the most amazing people as we tell this great story is truly humbling. We will make you proud.”

Others, however, are deeply concerned about whether the film will faithfully address colorism. Many believe Stenberg’s casting sends a disappointing message about the limited opportunities for darker-skinned actresses in Hollywood, especially in roles where skin tone is integral to the story.

Tomi Adeyemi Responds

Despite the controversy, Adeyemi seems enthusiastic about the film’s direction. In a TikTok video posted shortly after the casting announcement, she promised “more Nigerian castings and results from the open call soon.” While her optimism resonated with some fans, others remain skeptical about how the movie will handle themes central to the book.

What’s Next?

The Children of Blood and Bone adaptation has reignited conversations about representation and colorism in Hollywood, but more importantly, it has sparked a need for Nigerian representation in stories centered around Nigerian characters.  Will the movie honor the criticisms? A move that is highly unlikely as casting decisions have already been made, or will it fall short of fans’ expectations? Only time will tell. What’s certain is that this casting decision has stirred a larger debate about authentic representation in fantasy films—and the industry at large. As the film progresses, fans will be watching closely, hoping it delivers a story as groundbreaking as the book.

Whether or not you agree with the casting, there’s no denying that Children of Blood and Bone is already making waves—and not just for its blockbuster potential. The film offers an opportunity to address meaningful representation on a bigger stage.
