Tyla is officially the first ever Grammy winner for the newly created category - Best African Music Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, for her hit song, Water.
The South African star made history at the 66th edition of the Grammy Awards which took place on February 5, 2024; Winning the award over Davido, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Asake and Olamide.
The singer was shocked to receive the award, and in usual-iconic Tyla fashion, her speech showed it. "What the heck?!" she stated on stage. "This is crazy, I never thought Iâd say I won a GRAMMY at 22 years old."
Her hit song âWaterâ garnered worldwide favor, which translates into her first-ever win. The amapiano tune did well on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 2023, it then went on to make her the highest African female solo artist in the history of Billboard.
Her win is going in history as the Grammy Awards has taken a step to celebrate music from all over the world.
Tylaâs acceptance speech will surely inspire a lot of people all over the world who dare to dream. During her acceptance speech, the singer appreciated her family, saying âI know my motherâs crying somewhere in here.â
