Biodun Stephen’s ‘Sista’ dropped on Prime Video and it pulled the heartstrings of Nigerians in all the right ways.
If you’re looking for a captivating Nigerian film that will leave you wanting more, then you’re in the right place. The entire premise of the show rests on the shoulder of Kehinde Bankole’s character, Sista. It is a story of motherhood, heartbreak, love, joy and redemption and it will leave you sobbing by the time it’s over.
Sista offers a compelling look into the life of a single mother, Vicky, or popularly referred to as Sista, the story revolves around her past and present life all interwoven into one in a way that is painstakingly beautiful, yet interesting.
Sista was left behind with a two-year old son while she was eight months pregnant, after years of raising her kids beautifully and not without struggle, the deadbeat father played by Deyemi Okanlawon, comes back into the picture and ends up stealing the spotlight with his wealth. The beauty of this story is that it is the story of many single mothers out there who showed up everyday for their children no matter how tough it got, it is also the story of men who run away the minute it gets tough.
The writer does a beautiful job of telling the story of a single mother that most women out there can probably relate to. Sista is a strong woman and it shows in how she raised her kids and how she worked endlessly and tirelessly to make sure they lived a life that was well above average despite the shortcomings of her partner. This is a story of the strength of a woman and a mother, the film will have you feeling happy, sad, angry, but most of all, inspired.
The cast of Sista is beyond incredible, their talent shone through in each of the characters they portrayed, the star studded cast includes Kehinde Bankole, Bisola Aiyeola, Deyemi Okanlawon, Akintola Adeoluwa, Adediwura Adesegha,Temitope Olowoniyan,Chiamaka Uzokwe,Chimezie Imo, and Adedamola Adewale. Together, they brought all their characters to life in a way that was interesting to watch, and beyond aspirational.
All we can say after watching this film is, come along with tissues because it will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. While we’re on the topic of emotions, can we talk about Fola’s character played by Deyemi Okanlawon, the character is so well rounded and fully-annoying to the point where he’ll leave you in a fit of rage, and a turnaround feeling of forgiveness. His character only begs the question, ‘Why is life unfair?’ If you really think about it, he was a coward who left his family, yet he was rewarded with a great life and a new family. Fortunately for us, his wife was there to hold him accountable for his selfish behavior, and Sista gave him a tough time the moment he returned with his tails between his legs.
The storyline will have you hooked till the end, there’s never a dull scene and the chemistry between all the characters will make you feel like you were there for the whole thing, there is so much to look forward to in this film, from Bisola Aiyeola’s british accent and quick wit to Tope Olowoniyan’s flawless hausa, and then there’s the children, their love and respect for their mother will leave you with the need to appreciate your own mother for all that she’s ever done, as you should.
