Netflix’s Carry On has had a mixed bag of good and bad reviews from critics all around the world following its premiere, some people loved it, and some people have been super critical of its plot lines and lack of realism.

Then there are people like us, movie lovers in the form of critics who can say without a doubt that Carry On was probably the most entertaining and gripping movie of the year 2024. The action thriller directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by T.J. Fixman, follows Taron Egerton as Ethan Kopek, a TSA officer working on Christmas Eve at an airport. He finds himself in a sticky position after asking for a chance at a promotion in the baggage scanning lane. This promotion leads to a series of very unfortunate events which could be easily summarised as a deadly terrorist plot. The villain played by Jason Bateman, threatens Ethan into letting a mysterious bag go through the scanner without it getting flagged as dangerous, which it is.

When it comes to the plot, we’re giving it a solid 8 out of 10, not because it is perfect or lacks loopholes. No, we could smell certain loopholes and plot holes from miles away, but in the spirit of simply enjoying a good movie, which is just an exaggeration of real life if we’re being honest, we’d say that the plot was overall gripping, enjoyable and we were hooked the whole way through. If that doesn’t deserve a solid score, we don’t know what does.

Carry On | Netflix
Carry On did what most movies haven’t done in a while, it’s almost as though it was an action thriller created to almost be feel-good-esque. The execution wasn’t taken too seriously, and we mean that in the best way possible. I can’t count the number of movies I watched this year that I just couldn’t get through, but with Carry On, for some reason, I couldn’t just stop watching till the end.

To put it simply, Carry On will probably not win any groundbreaking awards, and that’s okay because not all good movies win awards. If anything, Netflix’s Carry On felt a bit reminiscent of early 2000s action movies that were thrilling and fun to watch, just for the sake of it. Whatever the critics say, there’s no denying that Carry On was entertaining from the start to the end, to top it all off, the well-executed suspense was just the icing on the cake it needed to be a hit movie.

Moving on to the casting, I’d say it was exceptional. Probably because any movie with Sofia Carson, could do no wrong. Sofia Carson as Nora, Ethan’s girlfriend, was exactly what the movie used to secure its feel-good status. Nora also works at the airport, so the stakes are at an all-time high for Ethan if he wants to see her and their unborn child alive. The movie is the perfect action thriller/ Christmas movie to be made this year, it all works perfectly from beginning to end, and we’re not just saying this because of our Sofia Carson obsession, it’s just because the movie was entertaining to watch, and that’s the truth.

Taron Egerton delivers a powerhouse performance as the resourceful TSA officee, while the supporting cast, including Jason Bateman, Danielle Deadwyler, Sinqua Walls, Dean Norris, and other stars, adds depth and intrigue to the story.

In the spirit of being completely honest, the one downside of the movie was the ending. I’m not saying it wasn’t good enough, and without spoiling it for you, what I would say is that it felt a bit unresolved. Almost as though they skipped to the good part, but then again, there’s only so much you could fit into a movie’s plot line, especially when timing is quite limited.

Our Eavesdroppr score for Netflix’s Carry On is certainly an 8.5 out of 10. Carry On is the kind of movie that you watch when you’re having a bad day, it is a combination of highly entertaining, emotional, and fun.

The story is fast-paced and engaging, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. You'll be guessing right up until the final moments. Despite the chaos, Carry On ultimately delivers a message of hope and resilience. It reminds us that even in the face of danger, we can always find the strength to overcome.

We highly recommend!
