When it comes to fashion, it’s so easy to get it wrong but if there’s anything we’ve learnt from watching Survival of the Thickest on Netflix, it is that fashion should be fun, bold, quiet, comfortable, empowering, and whatever you want it to be.

Survival Of The Thickest gave us everything, from self-love to love triangles to friendships, and a whole lot of fashion tips. The best part of watching Survival of the Thickest is how relatable it is, but most importantly, how empowering it is.

On July 13, Netflix debuted “Survival of the Thickest,” It stars Michelle Buteau, and in our books, she can do no wrong. The story follows Michelle’s character as a plus-sized stylist in her thirties, her love life after a devastating breakup, her friendship circle, and her journey to becoming a boss lady.

The show is based loosely on Michelle Buteau’s collection of personal essays of the same name, and even though it’s based in New York, the way the show blends humor and fashion is epic on all fronts, and it’s great to see.

Here are a few looks we loved from Survival of the Thickest, and a few fashion tips we grabbed along the way.

Dress For The Body You Have

There’s a scene where Michelle Buteau’s character is styling a celebrity played by Garcelle Beauvais, and Garcelle’s character is so insistent on using a corset to take two inches off her waist. The theme of body positivity in Survival of the Thickest is just so refreshing, Michelle who plays Mavis says to Natasha (Garcelle Beauvais) “You are gorgeous the way you are” and we were sold.

This just goes to show that you don’t have to dress for a body that’s not yours, dress for the one you have and that will be a game changer. You’re gorgeous the way you are, and how you dress should uplift how you feel about yourself.

Bold and Beautiful

It doesn’t matter if your style is a bit more understated than most, the main thing is that you have the power to control what you wear and how you dress. No matter what your fashion game is, the one thing you have to remember is to be yourself, loudly and proudly.

Go for those outfits you think people will laugh at, go for the outfit that isn’t exactly trending (or the one that is trending). The whole point is, no matter how you choose to express your individuality through your fashion, do it in a way that is pleasing to you. Be bold about it, because you’re beautiful no matter what your style is, or isn’t.

The Boss Lady

Tasha Smith as Marley in Netflix’s “Survival of the Thickest" is goals when it comes to that boss lady representation, she’s a corporate baddie and it’s enthralling to see her shine in each episode. From one boss lady look to another and it will inspire you to be on your A-game at all times.

When you’re picking outfits for your day job, don’t be afraid to go for bold statements, bold colors, and a confident stride to top it all off. Try rocking a pants suit or as we like to call it, a power suit once in a while. Pant suits are the ultimate girl-boss outfit, you can never go wrong when you have that in your corporate wardrobe.

Play With Colors

A lot of the characters in Survival of the Thickest had that artsy vibe going on, and boy! Was it cute to see. When it comes to fashion, you cannot stay in the same lane all the time, sometimes you just have to go for those bright colors you’re so scared of. Sometimes, you need to give prints, and anything out of your comfort zone a try.

The colors you choose play a huge part in just how much you pop, you’re already a star but the key to standing out even more is that extra pop of color in your wardrobe. We know black looks good on you, but trust us, a little color sometimes never actually hurts anyone.

What Does Your Street Style Say About You?

Street style is extremely liberating in the sense that it is more about you as an individual and less about trendy fashion, it’s easy to blur the lines between these two things but Survival of the Thickest does street style justice by making sure each character has a street style that is specific to the personality they portray.

The lesson here is that your street style could be anything you want it to be, it could be a mix of culture and trend, it could be solely based on your quirkiness or goofiness. The trick is to just be yourself at all times, and let it shine through in your street style.

There are so many things we love about Survival of the Thickest, it's just one of those shows that is a celebration of self. You need to love who you are, and the rest follows. Whether that’s in your love life, your work life or your fashionista life, the first step you need to take is towards showing yourself some love.
