A New Consumer Reports investigation has raised red flags about 10 synthetic braiding hair brands, two of which are used by many people in Nigeria, and all of which are used by many black women across the globe. This consumer reports study found carcinogens, a substance known for its ability to increase the risk of developing cancer. From X-Pression Pre-Stretched Braiding hair to Darling Textured Hair Extensions, could these 10 synthetic braiding hair brands be doing more harm than good?

Consumer Reports' latest investigation states that synthetic braiding hair is largely unregulated, this means that these hair extension brands are not expected to list some ingredients on their packages. According to their report, this puts the health of the people who wear synthetic braiding hair at risk, and not just those who wear these synthetic braiding hair, but also people who install them as well. Consumer Reports did however state that one way to reduce overall exposure, would be to take breaks between braid installs.

This report is based on testing which found that every sample of these popular ten braiding hair products contained carcinogens, which are chemicals that may cause cancer. According to reports, three of the samples tested positive for a chemical called benzene, which is a carcinogen that is highly discouraged for use because of its potential to cause cancer.

Consumer Reports
The Director of Product Safety at Consumer Reports, James Rogers, spearheaded this synthetic hair testing carried out by Consumer Reports, and he stated that testing found lead in 90 percent of the products, which is not safe at any level whatsoever. The study doesn’t stop there, it goes further to point out that the traditional practice of dipping the hair into hot water, also releases volatile organic compounds that can cause irritation to the eyes, lungs, and throat.

Consumer Reports reached out to all 10 brands listed in the study which include brands such as Sensationnel, debut, Sassy Collections, Shake-N-Go, Magic Fingers, Hbegant, and Darling. Two of those brands responded to the reports, strongly disagreeing with the study and its testing results. Sensationnel stated, “We unequivocally stand by the safety of Sensationnel products, and our company urges consumers to continue to confidently use Sensationnel products.” Magic Fingers also stated, “We strongly stand by the safety of our products and the quality materials used to make them.”

Where does this leave women who use these braiding brands? We need to take safety precautions which have been recommended by experts, this includes: Reading labels carefully, limiting how long you wear these hair extensions, checking for product recalls. Consumer Reports also recommends visiting the doctor and filing a report with agencies in charge if you experience reactions to synthetic braiding hair.
