Chioma Nnadi is a fashion journalist and a podcaster, she was recently appointed as the new head of editorial content at British Vogue. Chioma Nnadi revealed yesterday that she will be assuming the role of Head of Editorial Content for the magazine. Earlier this year, Edward Enninful announced his departure from British Vogue. After months of speculation as to who would replace him, it has been revealed that the London-born writer and journalist, Chioma Nnadi will take over the role on October 9.
Chioma Nnadi’s journey is nothing short of inspirational, she's worked in Indie magazines like Trace and The Fader, she worked her way up as she began her Vogue journey in 2010 as a fashion writer, she climbed up the ladder to the position of editor for Vogue’s US website, and now she's making history as the first black woman to be named head of editorial content.
"Is there pressure? Yeah, there’s undoubtedly pressure — it’s Vogue,” Nnadi shared in an interview with The Guardian. She added, “It still means something to be in Vogue, it still has authority. [And there’s pressure] because of Edward. He broke new ground. It’s more than being part of a magazine – it’s part of the cultural conversation.”
Nnadi’s heritage is just another added layer that adds a certain uniqueness to her story. Her mother is a Swiss-German nurse, while her father is Nigerian. Her father came to the UK in the 1960s to study, and Nnadi grew up in central London, where she began her journey to where she is today.
Chioma Nnadi has a love for vintage fashion, she embodies the very idea of finding unique pieces everywhere she goes, and she is noted to have a wardrobe that consists of a variety of vintage pieces.
Nnadi is set to work with Anna Wintour, the Chief Content Officer and Global Editorial Director, at Vogue. According to Anna Wintour, “Chioma is beloved among her colleagues at Vogue, and is an editor and writer with an impeccable reputation—both here and in the fashion industry at large.” She added, “I can’t think of a more worthy person to follow in his footsteps than Chioma, who has proven herself adept at speaking to our digital audience and has found ways to extend Vogue’s reach, authority, and influence across all of our platforms. She is passionate about fashion, music, and culture, and I couldn’t be happier that she will be leading our editorial and creative teams.”
Chioma Nnadi’s appointment will surely bring out a fresh perspective for the magazine, especially as it has faced its fair share of criticism. Nnadi is an editor and writer while Enninful came through styling, and while her appointment as the new head of editorial content varies from that of her predecessor, she acknowledges the fact that Vogue is a fashion magazine. As she stated in The Guardian, “The impulse is the same, regardless of whether you style or write. Edward had that instinct, even though his background was different from mine. But the question will always be, how do we capture the zeitgeist? It’s important to think about who is telling the story, and whose story we are telling.”
Chioma Nnadi is a force to be reckoned with, and we cannot wait to witness the impact she makes as the new head of editorial content at British Vogue.
