This has been a so-so year when it comes to the number of TV shows rolling in and out, there’s been a lot of cancellations, but there’s also been a lot of new TV shows on the block that are certainly worth watching.
Let’s get right into it, shall we? If you’re looking for a good TV show to sink your teeth into this month, we’ve got you covered. Here are five new ones that will give you all the feels, all the angst, and all the cliffhangers we all love and need from a good series.
The Buccaneers
The Buccaneers is a period drama television show that has been compared to Bridgerton way too many times in our opinion. While we get the comparison based on their shared genre or time period, they couldn’t be any more unalike. The Buccaneers is a period piece that takes its modernity up a notch in terms of its dialogue, without the regency outfits, you might even forget it is a period piece.
The series is based on a novel, it follows five upbeat American girls in a tight knit friendship group and social circle on their journey to finding a suitable suitor in the British scene. The main character, Nan, finds herself in quite a pickle as she connects with not just one, but two men who happen to also be childhood friends. The love triangle alone is noteworthy but there's also a couple serious themes to keep an eye on. There's also the journey each one of the girls go through as they navigate their own love life and circumstance.
Gen V
Gen V is a spinoff series to the popular superhero television series, The Boys. It follows a unique group of superheroes as they navigate and uncover the treacherous truth about their superhero university. One of the main characters, Marie Moreau, starts off the show in a way that will have you glued to your screen. As a young teen, on the very first day of her period, she finds out she has super powers in a way that is beyond bloody, brutal, and to the detriment of her family.
If you haven’t watched The Boys and you’re interested in seeing just how chaotic Gen V is, you don’t necessarily have to watch The Boys to understand Gen V. Sure, there will be some holes to fill when characters from The Boys pop in and out of the Gen V universe, but all in all, you will still be able to watch the show without any major gaps.
Lessons In Chemistry
Lessons in Chemistry starts off as a nerdy love story in the making, it is set in 1950, and it gives you a glimpse of what it was like being a woman in such a time, and also what it was like being a black person in America. The story follows Elizabeth Zott, a brilliant woman whose dream of becoming a scientist faces challenges created by the society she lives in. Then she meets Calvin Evans, and everything in her life changes. Their love story is definitely one for the books, and it will definitely leave you balling your eyes out, but it isn’t just about love, there’s a lot of loss, friendship, success, motherhood, and other lessons to be learnt from this show.
Black Cake
Black Cake has a storyline we don’t see everyday, it follows Eleanor Bennett’s story, a mother who loses her life to cancer, leaving her two adult children with a voice recording that reveals the truth about her life and the secrets she hid from them for so long. Turns out Eleanor isn’t her real name, it’s Covey, and as a young girl living in the Caribbean she went through a hard knock life that no young girl should ever go through.
Everything they knew about their mother is about to change, the storyline will have you hooked from the very beginning, it has everything you need to have in a good television show, from love, secrets, death, racism, bad parenting, and friendship.
Still Up
If you’re looking for something light, with a little bit of a comedic relief, then Still Up is the one. It follows two insomniacs and best friends, Lisa and Danny as they stay in touch on the phone all through the night. You would think that nothing interesting happens at night, but for these two, a lot of funny, crazy misadventures happen as they bond more and more.
