From the very first scene of Breath of Life, there’s a sort of immersion I could feel myself getting into as the story took on a life of its own. There’s not a lot of movies that can take you from your world and put you right in the middle of a world created by what I can only describe as magical minds. If you haven't caught my drift yet, what I'm trying to say is, Breath of Life is more than just a movie, it is almost magical in a way that is indescribable.
There’s a lot to get into when it comes to this movie; From the star studded cast, to the cinematography, the stellar storyline, the time period, and the impeccable use of the voice-over to tell the entire story. All of this, and more, is why I could say without a doubt that this might just be the one of the best movies I've seen this year .
Breath of Life, written and directed by BB Sasore, tells the gut wrenching story of Timi, a man who loses his family and faith in the most tragic way, the storytelling on this front will have you in tears within the first few minutes of the entire movie. Years go by, and Timi meets Elijah, a young boy vying to be his housekeeper, soon enough, this young boy changes this man in a way that could only be described as divine.
I could yap on and on about this entire movie, from the brilliant performances of Wale Ojo as Timi, to the light Chimezie Imo brought to his role as Elijah, and the brilliance of Genoveva Umeh, Ademola Adedoyin and Eku Edewor, but there’s only so many words in the world that could truly describe this film, it’s one of those ones where you just have to see it for yourself, but before you do, let’s talk about the life lessons we got from Breath of Life.
God Really Is Everything
Whether you’re a believer or not, by the end of this movie, you would have felt an overwhelming sense of hope and faith. Afterall, Faith is the thing with feathers on it, and there’s a whole lot of it in this movie.
From the bible quotes to how one man’s faith in God is completely destroyed and restored all in one, there’s just so much to gain in that aspect of this film. Timi loses his family in a way no human heart could possibly bear, of course he pulls away from God, but by the end of the movie, because of Elijah, he finds his way back.
Love Truly Conquers All
First off, let’s swoon over the love story between Anna and Elijah. When you talk about epic love stories in the history of film, this should surely go down in history as one of those love stories. The fact that Elijah and Anna flirting in a church made my whole day, says everything you need to know about the undeniable chemistry between Chimezie Imo and Genoveva Umeh.
Then there’s the love of Timi for his family, that man suffered more loss than anyone could possibly bear. The only way to measure a person’s life is through the love that they shared for the people around them, and you could just tell that Timi loved his family to the bone, and his love for Elijah shone through in the end when he really needed it the most.
At the end of the day, we all need love.
Just Be Kind
In your words, and in your actions, always be kind. This goes without saying, we all know that kindness goes a long way, but we also forget it as much as we know it. To quote Houston Kraft, “Kindness is one of these essential things that we collectively say is good, but we collectively aren’t very good at. Why are we so bad at something we believe in?”
In a lot of ways, each and every one of the main characters taught me a lesson on kindness. Elijah to his very bones, was one of the most kind-hearted characters I've seen in a while, and everything he got in the end, was truly well deserved.
Breath of Life is the kind of movie that makes you feel something, that’s how you know a movie is truly good. It will have you crying, laughing, and swooning, all in one breath.
