African animations are finally having their own moment in the sun, from Netflix's first original African animated series, to a whole bunch of others. There’s a lot of incredible talent in Africa, and recently, the African Animation industry has witnessed an extraordinary surge in creativity and quality.
Gone are the days where African kids had to rely mostly on foreign animation, we can now proudly enjoy great quality animation that kids in this continent could easily relate to and see themselves in.
Let’s go ahead and dive into the world of animation and unveil the top African animations of 2023 that have taken storytelling and visual artistry to new heights.
Mikolo
Mikolo is an African animation and live-action gem created by Niyi Akinmolayan, it follows two african kids who go to visit their Grandmother, only to end up in Irumole forest where magical creatures live. As if things couldn’t get more interesting, one of these magical creatures follows them home without them realizing it.
This incredible piece of work was shot in Ondo state, Nigeria, it is an African animation that will be a great watch for children, and parents. The entire family will definitely find this interesting, and there’s also a ton of lessons to be learnt.
Supa Team 4
Supa Team 4 opened the door up for us to witness what was to come in the world of African animation. As the first Netflix animation series written and produced in Africa, it does a tremendous job of creating an African animation that can be watched by kids, and everyone else.
The Netflix series follows a group of girls who become undercover superheroes in order to save the world, this series is set in the neoteric city of Lusaka. It is just so incredible that the world gets to see the beauty of African culture through the art of animation.
Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire
Kizazi Moto is yet another best African animation in 2023, it has everything, from aliens to monsters, and a whole lot of advanced technology. It is a perfect representation of various African tribes, the characters speak english and also easily switch up to other African languages, whether that’s Yoruba, or Zulu.
This animated series has been received by quite a variety of critics, but it still remains on our list of best African animations to watch in 2023, and if that’s not enough to seal the deal for you, just know that some of its voice actors includes stars like Nasty C, Kehinde Bankole, Lillian Dube, and Florence Kasumba. You’ll definitely be in for a treat with this animated series.
Garbage Boy And Trash Can
Cartoon Network made the best move of 2023 when they decided to air this animated epic superhero story. Nigerian animator, Ridwan Mooshod made history, as this is the first Nigerian animation to be aired on Cartoon Network.
This African animation series centers around Garbage Boy and his incredible sidekick, Trash Can. Together, they embark on the most extraordinary adventures, and they live in a world where appearances aren’t everything. A world where beauty and potential can be found in the most unexpected places, and a place where there’s unlimited possibilities.
Aau’s Song
Aau's Song is the ninth episode of the Star Wars: Visions Volume 2 that premiered on Disney+ on May 4, 2023. It is another great African animation from Triggerfish Animation Studio, it follows the story of a young girl finding her voice and learning how to use it for the greater good.
The little girl is Aau, she lives in a world where Kyber crystals are mined for the Jedi, and her singing talent could be the catalyst for crystal reaction, so she’s warned against using her voice. However, when the time comes, she has to make a choice, she has to find the courage to use her voice despite not knowing what the full extent of the outcome will be.
